The story
Roberto Spadoni - MAH
Some time ago I was invited to give a concert in Ravenna.
It was a real joy: you know how welcoming, warm, fun this Italian region - called Romagna -
and its people are and how they know how to pamper their visitors!

I remember the journey from Rome along the legendary E45
as it was yesterday.
First Umbria: Terni, Perugia, Città di Castello, up to San Sepolcro. Then finally the Apennines and the first scents of Romagna, the sources of the Tiber - incredibly pure waters! - Bagno di Romagna, and then down to Cesena, where I would be hosted, me and my beloved Gibson ES-347,
my Fender amp, my pedal board, my scores.
I love that route very much, but life on the road in general.

Being a special occasion, I shared those days with people and musicians who kept the level high on all fronts: you need a trusted crew in these cases!
They were days of music, laughter, work and (of course) great dinner time.

The opportunity to spend a few days in company, building music together, has given excellent results. Anticipating the days that would come, I had proposed to my friends to take this opportunity so intense and precious and not let it fade into the memories: the day after the concert the quartet entered the studio (Luca di Luzio Guitar Studio) and with the assistance of Gianluca Gadda at the console we recorded all in one breath the songs we had played the night before in concert.
A memorable day!

On those beautiful days it was fantastic to build together the sound of these songs, never recorded previously. Knowing the musicians well, I was able to ask them to enter this music with the right feeling, with a lot of heart, thinking of a warm and enveloping color, but also witty and playful if necessary: in other words,
to do some Jazz together!
After a period of deep reflections on how to publish and the way to share my own music,
I finally embarked on a new path.

From now on I decided to collect my productions under a record label that I called
SWORD RECORDS, of which the CD MAH is the first release.

Fabio Petretti (saxes)
(ENG)
We met long time ago: more than thirty years have passed since our meeting as students at Siena Jazz and the first concert we did together led by a very young Paolo Fresu. It was in 1989. Then we had many opportunities to collaborate and it has always been a pleasure.
Fantastic musician, precious person: I'm happy that we finally managed to leave a mark of our friendship.

Paolo Ghetti (bass)
(ENG)
Paolo is a musician who gives confidence to everyone who plays with him. A real helmsman of timing, as is required of a great double bass player. I am delighted to have him with us on this recording, for many years I have wanted to be able to do something beautiful and important together. His contribution was great.

Massimo Manzi (bass)
(ENG)
The great Max, in every sense!
Difficult to add something about a musician so loved and followed by so many jazz fans.
Wisdom, swing, sensitivity, energy, sound, interplay: all qualities that he always puts on the field with generosity.
I have finally fulfilled a dream I have been chasing for years!

MAH is the title track of the album.
I chose this word I chose this word - which expresses doubt and disenchantment, but also fun and irony - because I think it's a title that represents us
in this period of epochal changes.
It represents at the same time amazement, indecision, an acknowledgment of what we are going through, a way of living all this with
the difficulty of expressing an accomplished judgment.
How we were? How are we now? How will we be tomorrow? MAH ...
However, it is a dynamic, swinging and fun song, which remained for quite some time inside my computer, perhaps for this disenchanted title.

However, it is a dynamic, swinging and fun song, which remained for quite some time inside my computer, perhaps for this strange title.

Enjoy!

I'm glad to let you listen to another of the songs contained in MAH:
it's called Fuga Di Notizie (News Escape).
You can download it in mp3 or follow the score while you listen to it.
It is a piece that has a long and incredible history.
To write it, I was locked in a room, unable to go out.
Where was I? In a closet of a conservatory, completly isolated, for a composition exam. A table, a piano, a few sheets of music paper.
At the end I should have delivered it without keeping track of it.
"Such a pity!" I thought. So I decided to secretly copy it onto a stave sheet before delivering it. And so, freed from an archive where he probably would have been buried forever, he is now alive!
